Description

Baxter House is an early 19th century red brick house located in Ercall Magna, Rowton. It features a tiled roof with gabled ends and a brick dentil eaves course. The building has two storeys and an attic, with three bays. The original windows have been replaced by modern casements in the original openings, and the ground floor windows have been enlarged. A central round arched doorway is topped with a semi-circular fanlight that includes glazing bars and a cornice on consoles, though the door itself is a later addition. There are brick end stacks. This site is historically significant as it is said that Richard Baxter, the Presbyterian theologian who lived from 1615 to 1691, resided in a house here.
