Description

The Monument to Captain Webb, dated 1909, is a memorial located on High Street in Dawley. It features lion-head drinking fountains above the plinth and has pedimental gables over panelled sides that include inscriptions and medallions. Captain Matthew Webb, born in Dawley in 1848, was the first person to swim the English Channel and tragically died while attempting to swim the Niagara Rapids in 1883. A modern lamp is situated on top of the finial.
