Description
The Church of St Leonard, built in 1805 by Thomas Telford, is an ashlar church designed in an elongated octagonal shape with a hipped slate roof. It features two tiers of round-arched windows and a stringcourse between them. The large west tower is constructed in four stages, with the ground stage being rusticated. The bell stage includes clasping buttresses and round-headed bell-openings. Inside, the layout is distinct, featuring a rectangular chancel with sacristies in the adjacent triangles. There are galleries on three sides of the nave supported by slim columns. This church is similar in design to St Michael's Church in Madeley, which was also built by Thomas Telford in 1796.
