Description
The Coach House and Barn, located northwest of Upper House, dates from around the 17th century and has undergone significant alterations. It features a long timber-framed structure with red brick infill panels set on a sandstone plinth, topped by a plain tile roof with gabled ends. The road-facing side has three gables, each containing a 19th-century pointed arch window with a cast-iron lattice grille. There is a cart entrance at the west end, while the east end includes an 18th-century brick coach house wing that is positioned at right angles. This wing has an arcaded east side adorned with keystones and a tablet inscribed with the date 1765. A plaque on the front of the barn notes that "King Charles II hid in this barn 5 September 1651." In the 18th century, the barn was used as a local market.
