Description

The office range immediately south of the Clock Tower Warehouse at Coalbrookdale Ironworks was built between 1838 and 1847 as part of the Coalbrookdale Company. Originally a yard building and fire engine house, it was later extended in the late 19th century and altered around the mid-20th century. The structure is primarily made of stone but has been largely rebuilt in brick, topped with clay plain tile hipped roofs and featuring brick axial and lateral stacks.

The building was originally L-shaped and has since been lengthened and heightened to two storeys, with the addition of wings and canopied bays by 1883, mainly serving as offices. The open canopied bays were enclosed in the mid-20th century. The current layout consists of a two-storey L-shaped main range running north-south, with an east wing and a southwest wing at right angles. On the east side of the main range, there is a three-bay single-storey range, with a two-storey wing attached to the southeast.

The exterior of the two-storey main range features large multi-pane cast-iron windows, some with central pivot lights, cambered brick arches, and cast-iron lintels. The lower section of the east wall of the main range is constructed from stone rubble.

Inside, a projection on the north side contains a straight staircase with ornate cast-iron balusters and a newel, which originally had a cast-iron figure now located in the museum. The first-floor offices include cast-iron ceiling roses and ventilators, while the boardroom features a plaster cornice. The central range has cast-iron columns, most of which are boxed in.
