Description

Calcutts House is an early 18th century red brick house located in Jackfield. It features a plain tile roof with gabled ends and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The building stands three storeys high with attics and has three bays of sash windows with glazing bars set in exposed casings. The windows have painted brick flat arches with keystones and cornices. The central doorway is adorned with a moulded architrave, panelled reveals, a panelled door, a rectangular fanlight, and a pediment supported by large shaped brackets. There are three late 19th century gabled dormers on the roof. Inside, the house is said to contain a contemporary staircase. At the rear, there is a rainwater head dated 1695. Calcutts House was built by one of the Lochrances, Earls of Dundonald, likely the 9th earl, who lived from 1749 to 1831 and had an interest in new industrial processes. Notably, the house served as a cholera hospital in 1833.
