Description
The gate piers and attached ha-ha wall enclosing the cobbled terrace in front of The Citadel were built around 1824-1825 by Thomas Harrison of Chester for Sir Rowland Hill, the fourth baronet of Hawkstone. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar and feature chamfered coping on the wall. The gate piers at the east end of the terrace consist of four attached columns with moulded plinths and capping. The ha-ha wall, which encloses the terrace paved with large cobblestones, has four-sided bastions at the corners. An architect's drawing from July 3, 1824, indicates that the wall was originally designed to include stepped buttresses at the angles.
