Description
The lych gate, dated 1631, is located approximately 30 meters south-west of the Church of St. Oswald. It features a timber-framed structure that is now supported on 18th-century walls, which were repaired in the late 20th century. The roof is made of stone slate and has wooden finials at the gables. There are four gables, each with a tie beam and collar supported by two vertical struts; the northern collar is inscribed with the date 1631. The tie beams on the north and south sides have a slightly cambered arch at the center, with mortice and peg holes indicating where former vertical posts were placed. A low stone wall on the south side is complemented by early 19th-century cast-iron railings with urn-capped standards, and there is a central position for a gate. This lych gate was formerly an entrance to the town's grammar school, which is now Nos. 1 to 3, Church Terrace, and it is locally referred to as the Griddle Gate.
