Description

Lower Trebert is a farmhouse that has been divided, dating from the 14th or early 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th or 17th century. It was remodeled in the mid-to-late 19th century and underwent further changes in the mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame constructed in cruck style, with walls rebuilt and eaves raised using coursed limestone rubble. Some of the original stone was removed in the mid-20th century and replaced with render. The roof is slate with a catslide over a rear outshut.

The structure consists of 2½ framed bays aligned northeast to southwest, and it retains the remains of a former hall house. It has one storey and an attic, with an end stack to the left and a brick ridge stack off-centre to the right. The front has three windows, featuring 20th-century two- and three-light metal casements and three gabled semi-dormers. The ground floor windows alternate with two boarded doors.

Inside, there are three full cruck trusses. The former open hall truss to the northeast has moulded blades and collar, cusped arch-braces, cusped V-struts, and an Alcock apex-type L2 with a curved yoke, showing signs of smoke blackening. There is likely a late 16th or 17th-century inserted floor and stack in the two bays to the northeast, and a large open fireplace in the ground floor room to the left, featuring a roll-moulded lintel. The right-hand end was derelict at the time of the last survey in November 1984.
