Description

This building is a barn located approximately 100 metres to the north-west of Acton Farmhouse. It dates back to the 15th century, with alterations and additions from the 17th century and the mid to late 19th century. The structure is timber framed and features weatherboarding, with 20th-century corrugated iron cladding on the south side, and a coursed limestone rubble plinth and addition to the north. The roof is made of corrugated iron and stone slate, hipped over a 19th-century cross wing to the north, which has a catslide over an outshut.

Originally, this was an open hall house consisting of three framed bays, with an additional framed bay added to the south and a 19th-century cross wing to the north. The framing consists of square panels. The barn is one storey high, with a 19th-century floor inserted in the third framed bay from the south, and the cross wing is two storeys tall.

On the west front, there is a central gabled eaves loft dormer featuring a boarded loft door, along with another boarded loft door in the cross wing to the left. There are also two ground floor boarded doors. Inside, the barn contains three full cruck trusses: two trusses to the north with Alcock apex type B, and a former hall cruck truss to the south, which has a continuous chamfer on the lower part of the blades, now lacking arched bracing, with a cambered collar and inclined queen struts above the collar, and an Alcock apex type L2. There is a queen strut truss located between the first and second bays from the south, and the roof features double staggered purlins.
