Description
The Squinch Bridge, built around 1800 to 1806, crosses a drainage ditch that runs under the Prees Branch of the Ellesmere Canal, designed by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. This red brick bridge features a rebuilt coped parapet and a single segmental arch. It is likely linked to the drainage of Whixall Moss, which was necessary for the construction of the Prees Branch of the canal during that period. The Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846. The bridge is included for its group value.
