Description
Roundthorn Bridge is a canal roving bridge built around 1800 on the Ellesmere Canal, designed by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. It is constructed of red brick with some areas of engineering brick patching and features a coped stone parapet. The ramped approaches on both sides of the towpath are made of uncoursed rubble. The bridge has a single elliptical arch that includes keybricks, a string course, and a parapet. The section of the former Ellesmere Canal where Roundthorn Bridge is located was constructed between 1797 and 1804. The Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846.
