Description
Starks Bridge is a canal lift bridge located on the Shropshire Union Canal in Whixall. It was likely built between 1800 and 1806 by the engineers William Jessop and Thomas Telford, who also designed the Llangollen Canal. This wooden bascule bridge operates using a counterweight and chain system. The Prees branch of the canal was initially planned to extend to Prees Higher Heath, but by 1806, it only reached Quina Brook near Edstaston, where the construction was halted. In 1813, the Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company, and in 1846, it became part of the Shropshire Union Canal.
