Description
Bridge Number 43 is a canal bridge located on the Shropshire Union Canal, built around 1800 as part of William Jessop's and Thomas Telford's Ellesmere Canal. The bridge is constructed of red brick with some patches of engineering brick and features a coped stone parapet. It has a single elliptical arch that includes keybricks, a string course, a parapet, and corner piers. Notably, there is a cast-iron plate above the arch on the north side displaying the bridge number "43" in raised lettering. The section of the former Ellesmere Canal where Bridge No. 43 is located was constructed between 1797 and 1804. The Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846.
