Description

The White House is a cottage, originally one dwelling but later divided, dating back to the 17th century, with significant remodelling and an addition in the mid-19th century. The original structure is timber framed with red brick nogging, with a later brick addition. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The cottage has two framed bays, with a further addition, and exhibits Tudor Gothic detailing. It is one storey high with an attic. The gables have scalloped barge boards, and two full gabled dormers each with a two-light wooden casement; the dormer on the right has a decorative brick hoodmould. A brick stack rises from the ridge, off-centre to the right. The front has five window bays; the two central bays contain two-light wooden casements with rendered returned hoodmoulds, while a blocked window to the right also features a rendered hoodmould. Two one-light casements flank a boarded front door, which is sheltered by a 19th-century gabled wooden porch constructed with chamfered posts, curved braces, a boarded tympanum, and a decorative finial. The north gable end has a one-light attic casement and a two-light ground-floor casement, both with rendered hoodmoulds. Inside, the roof features collar and tie-beam trusses with queen and V-struts, alongside chamfered beams with ogee stops, and a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. Original 17th-century boarded doors remain, complete with strap hinges. The house occupies a prominent location at the crossroads in the centre of the village.
