Description

The Old School House is a school, later converted into a house, dating from 1815, with additions made around 1845. The exterior is rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, likely over coursed sandstone rubble, and has a hipped slate roof. Constructed in a Gothick style, the building is one storey high, with a prominent plinth, projecting end piers, an external brick end stack to the left, and a brick ridge stack to the rear wing. It has four bays, with three windows on the right-hand side featuring intersecting Gothick tracery and raised architraves bearing impost blocks and keystones. The central window is a taller 20th-century wooden replacement, retaining the blocked architrave and a larger keystone. A mid-19th century gabled porch, set at a right angle to the left, features a cast iron Gothick window and a segmental-headed boarded door with a side-light and chamfered reveals. A cast iron Gothick window is also present on the right-hand return front of the main block. A mid-19th century one-storey and attic, and two-storey wing extends from the rear. Inside, the roof features arch-braced collar trusses and king posts.
