Description
The building is a barn, now partly used for garaging, along with an attached courtyard wall, located approximately 30 metres north of Ford House. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of red brick with a plain tile and slate roof. The barn is two storeys high, with a semi-basement on the south-east side. It features a high stepped plinth, a dentil brick eaves cornice, and parapeted gable ends with chamfered sandstone copings that are moulded at the base.
On the south-west front, there are two boarded loft doors and three pairs of large boarded double doors with depressed arches to the left. To the right, there are four tiers of ventilation slits and a segmental-headed stable door that likely served a former cow house in the semi-basement. The right-hand corner of the barn is rounded up to the loft level. The gable ends have tiers of ventilation slits and segmental-headed boarded loft doors, with the one on the south-east side blocked. The rear of the barn also shows four tiers of ventilation slits and rounded corners that corbel out to the angle at loft level above.
The interior has not been inspected, but chamfered beams have been noted. The adjoining courtyard wall to the south-west is made of red brick with red sandstone coping, measuring approximately 15 metres long and 2 metres high, with a pair of boarded wooden gates leading into the courtyard at the south-west end. Together, the barn and wall form two sides of a service courtyard to the north-west of Ford House, which also includes a stable block and a dovecote.
