Description

This barn, located on the east side of the courtyard approximately 100 meters southeast of Heydon Hall, dates from the 18th century and mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a steeply-pitched roof, which is covered with single-roll clay tiles on the west side and pantiles on the east side. The barn has a rectangular five-stead plan and a symmetrical facade on the west side with eight bays. The third and sixth bays are slightly advanced and topped with later shaped gables.

There are waggon entrances with keyed semicircular rubbed brick arches, complemented by stuccoed quoins and reveals. Between the entrances, there are square honeycomb brick vents arranged in pairs. The eaves cornice is quadrant-moulded brick, and the north and south gables are parapeted, featuring square apex-finials and continuous tumbling-in to the parapet. A catslide roof extends over a lean-to along the east side.

The roof structure includes two tiers of staggered butt-purlins with straight wind-braces supporting the upper tier. The original tie beams had straight braces connecting to the wallposts and corbels. Inside, there is a brick threshing floor at the south end.

Additionally, there is an attached red brick courtyard wall at the southwest corner, which has half-round coping and a square gate pier topped with a ball-finial. An attached wall at the northwest corner connects to an archway across the drive, featuring a semicircular arch with a square-topped parapet, although the details of this archway are obscured by creeping vegetation.
