Description

Number 17 in Clunton is a farmhouse dated 1737, with later additions and alterations. It features roughly coursed limestone slab masonry and a slate roof, which replaced the original stone slates at the rear. The building has two storeys and a gable-lit attic, with a four-window front. The early 19th-century multi-paned cast-iron casements are found in the two right bays on the first floor, while the two left bays have mid-20th-century casements. All windows have stone wedge lintels that are grooved to imitate ashlar blocks. On the ground floor, there are three-light multi-paned casements to the left and between the two right bays, both with tumbled stone heads. A four-panel door with a flat hood is located directly below the third window from the left.

The right gable end features an integral end stack with a 19th-century purple brick shaft, and there is a roughcast external lateral stack with a red brick top on the rear left. A datestone marked "JGM/1737" is positioned between the second and third windows from the left on the first floor. The left gable end is covered with iron sheeting, which is said to conceal a timber frame. Attached to the left is a lower range that includes a granary on the first floor, featuring a fixed-light window at the center and a plank door to the right.

Inside, the farmhouse has stone-flagged floors throughout, including in the lower range (dairy). The interior also features chamfered ceiling beams and stone inglenook fireplaces. An oak winder staircase leads from the first floor to the attic, which has a double-purlin roof in three bays, with trusses that were plastered over at the time of the last survey in August 1986. The building includes 18th-century plank and ledged doors.
