Description

Olde Church House is a cottage that dates from the mid-17th century and was extended in the mid to late 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill, and the left wall of the gable-fronted range is roughcast. There is a rubblestone addition on the right that has a planted timber frame at the front, and the roof is covered with slate.

Originally, the cottage had a two-cell layout aligned north-south, with a two-storey gabled range added to the west in the 19th century, creating the current L-shape. The 17th-century section is one storey high with a gable-lit attic, while the 19th-century addition is two storeys. The framing of the 17th-century part consists of square panels, with three panels from the cill to the wall plate. It has a queen-strut truss at the front, featuring upper and lower collars and projecting double-purlin ends. The rear gable is made of limestone slab masonry and has a stepped external end stack.

The first floor of the front gable has a 20th-century metal casement window, and the ground floor has an infilled window. The entrance is through a 20th-century flat-roofed planted timber frame porch located at the angle with the 19th-century range, which has a 19th-century casement window on each floor and an internal end stack with a red brick shaft. There is also an external lateral stack with a 20th-century red brick top on the east wall of the 17th-century part. The interior has not been inspected, but the 17th-century section is likely to be of interest.
