Description

Clunton Mill is a disused mill, likely built in the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings and red brick on the upper level at the rear, topped by a slate roof. The main structure is a rectangular block with a full-length outshut at the rear that houses the wheel. The mill has three levels, featuring a stable door on the left and a casement window on the right, as well as segmental-headed windows on each floor of the right gable end. Circular iron ties are present, and the outshut has a segmental arch leading to the mill race on the left.

Inside, there is a remarkable survival of equipment. The undershot wheel has an iron axle along with wooden spokes and paddles, and there are cogs for the sluice gate nearby. The ground floor has a stone-flag floor and a massive plain cross beam, with a ladder staircase leading to the first floor. On this level, there is a corn bin on the right and a chute from a later flour dresser on the left. The gearing is connected to the millstones located behind a weather-boarded partition to the right, and there is a secondary wheel attached to the main wheel. The first floor also contains two millstones in situ and pulleys for lifting gear, along with a late 19th or early 20th-century flour dresser in a cupboard-like structure to the left. A notice dated 1904 from the Shropshire County Council Public Health Department warns of the dangers of spreading consumption from spitting on floors and walls. The heavy plain cross beam and ladder staircase lead to the second floor, which features more chutes and pulleys, with the roof structure divided into two bays. The mill, which was used for grinding corn, ceased commercial operations in 1936 and completely in 1938. The infilled mill pond is located immediately to the west.
