Description
Nos. 8-15 St Alkmond's Place is a row of former cottages that have been extensively restored and are now in commercial use. They were possibly originally built to include shops. The buildings are largely from the 16th century but incorporate a 15th-century hall. They feature a timber frame with a Welsh slate roof. The open hall forms a wing to the west and consists of three bays with massive square-panelled timber framing, each bay having arched bracing that creates an arcade. There is a small gallery recessed in the rear gable facing Fish Street. The main 16th-century range connects Fish Street and St Alkmond's Place, with three storeys on Fish Street and two storeys on St Alkmond's Place. The timber frame includes close studding and a middle rail, along with some raking braces. The ground floor has a gallery beneath a very deep overhang of the upper storey, which is an original feature that has been extensively restored and may have originally served as shop booths. The panel infill in the wall behind this gallery has largely been replaced with glass. The first floor has irregular renewed fenestration, and there are two tall gabled dormers in the roof.
