Summerhouse Attached To West End Of Garden Wall At Blodwel Hall

The summerhouse attached to the west end of the garden wall at Blodwel Hall is a disused structure dated 1718, with some minor later alterations. It is built of red brick with rusticated sandstone ashlar on the front and rusticated corner piers at the rear, topped with a graded slate roof that is concealed by coped verges. The building has a square plan and is one storey high, featuring a moulded eaves cornice that extends across and around the front pedimented gable. This gable is adorned with cross crosslet-shaped finials at the corners and a disfigured carved finial at the center. The pediment displays an elaborately carved armorial device with trumpets and garlands.

In the center, there is a moulded round-headed arch flanked by plain pilasters, with a carved male head with a gaping mouth serving as the keystone. A segmental-headed plank door, which is a 19th-century addition, is set into the lower part of the arch. To the left return, there is a partially infilled window with a moulded eared architrave that retains original slots for wooden bars or stone transoms. At the time of the last survey in October 1986, a fragment of what appeared to be the center finial was found lying on the ground by the entrance. A plain datestone inscribed "1718" is located on the rear gable.

Inside, the summerhouse was in poor condition during the survey. A semi-circular wooden fanlight from a former doorway was found lying on the floor, along with painted round-headed niches on the back wall and remnants of a coved plaster ceiling with a wooden cornice.
