Description
Cosford Grange and Cosford Grange Farmhouse is a house that underwent remodelling in the early to mid 19th century, although it is based on an earlier structure. The building features stucco rendering over a sandstone cellar and has low-pitched hipped slate roofs. It is two storeys high with three windows, which include glazing bar sashes, and a tripartite arrangement on the ground floor. A central projecting Tuscan portico with glazed doors is present, along with a moulded string course over the ground floor and large plain ridge stacks. The right-hand return displays a datestone marked "WS" (William Stanier) dated "1706". The service extension, now known as Cosford Grange Farmhouse, is designed in a similar style but has closely spaced windows, resulting in a 2:2:4 window arrangement on the south front. This site is believed to be located on the grounds of a monastic grange that belonged to Buildwas Abbey, as noted in Eyton, Volume II (1855), pages 262-4.
