Description

This is a 17th-century barn located approximately 10 metres north-west of Upper Moat Farmhouse. It has undergone later alterations. The barn’s construction is timber framed, with some areas filled with red brick and others with weatherboarding, and it is roofed with corrugated iron. Originally comprising four bays, a slightly later two-bay section with a loft was added to the right, and the barn was converted to stables in the mid-19th century. A former threshing entrance features a wide double door in the third bay from the left, and two doors to the right of centre, the latter with an eaves hatch above; a segmental-headed opening is situated on the right. The right gable end and interior framing are exposed, showcasing square panels from the cill to the wall-plate, with long straight tension braces. The front wall of the two-bay addition was rebuilt in the mid-19th century using red brick. Inside, the original section has a four-bay roof with raking struts from the tie beams supporting the principal rafters. The two-bay addition has a Queen-strut roof. Upper Moat Farmhouse is not included in the listing.
