Description

A row of three houses, now incorporating a shop, was built in the early 19th century. The front is red brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof and two brick ridge stacks. The three storeys and cellar have a five-window arrangement featuring round-headed 6/6 sash windows with gauged brick flat arches above, and smaller 4/4 sashes above those. Brick corbels project from the eaves. The central house has a half-glazed, three-panel door in a moulded frame, topped with an overlight containing multicolored lead lights, recessed within a panelled case. It is protected by a flat hood supported by consoles on moulded pilasters, with a stone pediment above. Stone steps lead to the door, flanked by wrought-iron railings. A 20th-century bay window with plate glass sits to the left, built on an earlier base and incorporating a brick segmental arch over a recessed panel with an 18-pane light. To the far left is a gate. The side elevation of the left-hand house shows a 6/6 sash window above a 4/4 sash, alongside a blocked ground-floor opening. No. 85 has a six-fielded panel door with a swagged overlight, and 6/6 and 3/3 sash windows above. The rear elevation of No. 85 includes a three-storey wing that provides a double-depth plan, featuring an 8/8 sash window under a segmental arch, with a later casement to the right beneath a timber lintel; a 4/4 sash is above, also under a segmental arch. A stack to the left has been raised with brickwork, likely from the 20th century. An 8/8 sash window is present with an entrance to the left, both set under segmental arches. The left return has a single 6/6 sash window to the first and second floors. Nos. 87 and 89 have various casements and include single-storey wings, one with a Welsh slate roof and the other with plain tiles. A good wrought-iron sign-hanger is also present.
