Description
The Whitehall Gatehouse, dating circa 1580, stands on Monkmoor Road in Shrewsbury. Constructed of roughly coursed and squared red sandstone with a plain tiled roof, it was built by Richard Prince between 1578 and 1582 and is contemporary with the main building of Whitehall. The gatehouse features a central, segmentally-arched gateway flanked by two-light mullioned windows. A coped gable above contains a three-light mullioned and transomed window. Moulded brick coping defines the end gables, with a stack located to the left. A small gabled turret projects to the left of the gatehouse, behind which is a timber-framed and brick nogged bellcote, featuring a wooden clock on the rear elevation.
