Description
The Old Vicarage is a parsonage house, built in the mid-to-late 18th century, and accompanied by a railed enclosure to the north-west. It was later used as the Cresswell Guesthouse and is now a house. The construction is primarily of squared and coursed limestone, with coursed rubble at the sides and rear, and a slate roof. The building is three storeys high with an attic. It features a wooden dentil eaves-cornice, integral brick end-stacks, and a semi-external lateral stack at the rear. The facade follows a 1:1:1 bay rhythm, with the central bay slightly projecting and containing a thermal window set within a triangular pediment. The windows are glazing bar sashes with flush frames and flat arches. The front door consists of six raised and fielded panels, a Gothick traceried rectangular overlight, and a doorcase with a moulded architrave and triangular pediment supported by a shaped bracket with guttae beneath. A wrought iron railed enclosure extends to the front, featuring three panels on each side of a central gate. The railings are of a spearhead design, with standards topped by urn finials. Inside, a staircase rises over two floors, exhibiting a dog-leg configuration with landings and winders, an open string, turned balusters (two per tread), a moulded handrail, and square newel posts. There are timber-framed partition walls, likely constructed of stud work. The house originally served as the residence of the vicar of Newcastle, a hamlet approximately four miles to the west of Clun, and is situated within Clun Civil Parish.
