Description

Clun Museum, originally known as the Court House or Town Hall, is a market-house dating from 1780 that has been remodelled, with the ground floor arcade likely blocked in the late 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble, showing signs of former limewashing, with sandstone ashlar facing on the ground floor to the south and west, and roughcast above the ground floor impost level. It features a hipped slate roof and stands two storeys tall.

Architectural details include a projecting plinth, a first-floor impost band, an interrupted floor band to the south, a moulded wooden eaves-cornice, and a central square cupola topped with a louvred keyed round-arch on each face, an ogee lead cap, a globe finial, and a wrought iron weather-vane. The south front has three bays arranged in a 1:1:1 rhythm, with the central bay slightly projecting. The first floor has 19th-century three-light wooden casements with ashlar lintels flanking a central lunette. The ground floor features a round-arched arcade with impost blocks and projecting dropped keystones, along with 19th-century two-light windows set back in the outer arches and two steps leading to a central archway with a boarded door set back.

On the west front, there is a carved sandstone Powis coat-of-arms on the first floor, dated "MLCCLXXX". The ground floor has a blocked round arch with impost blocks and a projecting dropped keystone, along with an inserted 19th-century nail-studded boarded arched door featuring elaborate strap hinges.
