Description
10 and 12 Cunnery Road are a pair of houses built between 1899 and 1900 by architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin for Campbell Hyslop. They are constructed from colourwashed rendered brick and feature a plain tile hipped roof with a central stack set diagonally.
The houses are single storey with an attic. The house on the left has UPVC windows in the original openings, while the house on the right has wooden casements. A central gable features two 3-light casements positioned under the gable above eaves level, with two similar casements on the ground floor. Each house has a wooden openwork gabled porch with decorative heads between the uprights and plank doors. The wall ends are designed to resemble inward sloping buttresses. There are small casements on the ends of each house and at the rear, where each house has a gable with a pair of 2-light casements set under the gable.
This pair of houses is significant as the first built example of Parker and Unwin's project designs for garden city housing, serving as a precursor to similar developments at New Earswick, Letchworth, and Hampstead Garden Suburb. The interior has not been inspected.
