Description
The Church of St John, built in 1849, is a Grade II listed building located in Hopton Wafers. Constructed from ashlar, the church features a plan that includes a nave with an incorporated chancel, a south porch, and a west tower.
On the exterior, the nave has an east window and four windows on the opposing side walls, all designed in a mid-19th century Gothic style with pointed arches and enriched metal lattice casements. The south window is sheltered by the south porch, which has an arched entrance, diagonal buttresses, and a semi-castellated parapet. The tower showcases a Romanesque-style round-headed window with simple ornamentation at both the upper and lower stages, along with string courses. A clockface is positioned in the middle stage on the south side, and the parapet features plain crenellation and raised corner merlons above weathered string courses.
Inside, the church includes a west gallery and a continuous nave and chancel. The furnishings consist of pine pews and a carved chancel screen, with a communion rail supported by an enriched Gothic-style cast-iron balustrade. The design of the church is inspired by St Michael in Hopton Wafers.
