Description
Brook Row Cottage is a 17th-century house featuring a painted timber-frame structure with painted render and brick infill panels, topped by a plain-tile roof. It has stone projecting gable-end stacks with brick upper shafts. The cottage consists of a two framed-bay range, with 20th-century lean-tos at each end and a 20th-century rear extension.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a single twin casement window on the first floor and a similar pair on the ground floor, flanking a boarded door with a moulded frame. The square framing is three panels high. On the left side, there is a 20th-century lean-to with a central brick end stack covering a rendered gable, along with a 20th-century attic casement. The right side features a gable partly covered by a large stone stack in four stages, topped with an upper brick shaft. The gable truss includes a cambered tie beam, collar, brace, and vertical struts, along with a 20th-century attic casement. The rear showcases square framing three panels high set on a concrete plinth, with two 20th-century casements and a 20th-century rear extension to the left.
Inside, there is a bridging beam with a deep hollow chamfer and stepped stop. The central truss has an interrupted tie beam with posts and brace, and a collar. The roof features a single trenched purlin. A square-framed truss cross-wall displays a raised plaster inscription reading 'EW EWF.I 1682', which is reputed to refer to Edward and Elizabeth Withy.
