Description
The Sheriffhales War Memorial is located in St Mary's churchyard and was constructed around 1920. It is made of sandstone and features a tall, tapering octagonal shaft topped with a cross that has octagonal limbs and a pinched ridge. The cross shaft rests on a three-stepped base, with the lower two steps being octagonal and the upper step square. The upper step is inscribed with the words, "To the Glory of God and in grateful memory of the men of Sheriffhales and Woodcote who died in the Great War 1914-1918" in capital letters. The middle step lists the names of those who fell during the war. At the base of the shaft, there is an inscription dedicated to Captain Foster Abney Giles, who was lost during World War II.
Due to erosion, a metal plaque was added in the late 20th century to one side of the middle step, which reiterates the dedication and the list of names. The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on December 6, 1920, by the Bishop of Lichfield, the Reverend A T Mitchell (Vicar of Sheriffhales), and the Reverend T E Stevenson (Rector of Church Aston).
