Description

The Guildhall is a Grade II listed building located on Bailey Head in Oswestry, constructed in 1893 by H. A. Cheers of Twickenham. It is built from limestone ashlar with a machine tile roof featuring stone ridge and end stacks. The design is inspired by the châteaux of the Loire Valley and consists of three storeys with attics. The main front, facing east, showcases elaborately shaped gables on both the left and right, with the right gable forming a projecting break.

The façade features mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights, arranged in groups of four. The windows on the left gable are round-arched and positioned higher, with an oculus above. There are various richly carved niches and panels above the windows, particularly on either side of the projecting break, which display scalloped decoration and grotesque figures. Additional Northern Renaissance-inspired carvings are found on the band above the ground-floor windows and on the entablature of the doorway. The doorway itself is round-headed, adorned with a fluted keystone and imposts, and is topped by a decorated broken segmental pediment. Above the doorway, there is a roundel featuring a figure of a seated king holding a sword in one hand and possibly an olive branch in the other. To the right gable, there is a datestone from 1893 set within a richly ornamented oval panel.
