SJ 2929 NW OSWESTRY C.P. BAILEY HEAD (west side)

14/15 The Guildhall - GV II Guildhall. 1893 by H. A Cheers of Twickenham. Limestone ashlar, machine tile roof with stone ridge and end stacks. In a style derived from the châteaux of the Loire Valley. 3 storeys with attics, moulded eaves cornice and cill bands; main front (east) has elaborately shaped gables to left and right, latter forming projecting break, mullioned and mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights throughout, 4 across with those to left gable round-arched and at higher level with oculus above; variety of richly carved niches and panels above windows, those to left and right of projecting break with scalloped decoration and grotesque figures, further Northern Renaissance-inspired carving to band above ground-floor windows and to entablature of doorway; this is round- headed with fluted keystone and imposts under decorated broken segmental pediment; figure of seated king holding sword in one hand and (? olive) branch in other in roundel above to left. Datestone 1893 on richly ornamented oval panel to right gable. B.O.E. p. 224-5.
