Description
The remains of Oswestry Castle are a 13th-century masonry structure located on a late-11th-century motte. The site features late-19th-century landscaping that incorporates some medieval masonry.
The collapsed masonry on the motte and the reconstructed bastion are made of uncoursed limestone and conglomerate rubble, while the late-19th-century revetment wall is constructed from coursed sandstone. This asset includes three groups of collapsed medieval masonry, with the largest section standing approximately 6 feet (1.8 meters) high. The ruins are situated on a partly manmade mound, which was raised in the late 11th century. Surrounding the base of the mound is a revetment wall of grey sandstone, which is taller on the south and east sides.
The south-facing section of the revetment wall features two grey sandstone piers with carved capitals and round-arched niches on their southern faces, which were taken from a demolished town gate. These piers flank a gate that is accessed via a flight of stone steps, which is topped with a crenelated wall. The piers support a pair of 21st-century metal plaques that provide a brief history of the castle and its restoration by English Heritage and Oswestry Town Council. The crenelated wall above the steps also displays two late-19th-century metal plaques marking the castle's opening to the public on June 24, 1890.
The revetment wall, parts of the pedestrian walkway around the mound, and the top of the mound itself are adorned with spearhead iron railings from the late 20th century. Additionally, part of the footpath around the mound features an iron handrail likely dating from the late 19th century. The gate between the stone piers matches the design of the late-20th-century railings.
