Description
Nos. 178-182 Abbey Foregate is a row of houses, now also used as shops, dating from the late 16th century. The buildings are timber-framed with a plain tiled roof and consist of two storeys with a total of eight windows. The structure features a long range and a cross wing, with the cross wing on the right refaced in brick that is painted to imitate timber-framing. The square panelled framing is exposed on the return elevation.
The ground floor has an inserted shop front, with a casement window above it. The main range is also framed in square panels, showcasing arched bracing and a middle rail. There is a doorway to the left, accompanied by a projecting three-light casement window, and an early 20th-century shop front in the centre. A doorway is located to the right, leading to a wide passage entry beyond. The upper storey jetties out, supported by a moulded bressumer, and features three projecting three-light casement windows. The building has gable and axial stacks. Nos. 178, 181, and 182 were listed on May 30, 1969.
