Description
Ludlow College Complex, formerly known as the Grammar School including Barnaby House, is a significant building located on Mill Street. Palmers Hall, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, serves as a dwelling and hall. It is constructed of brick with a plain tile roof and features a brick end stack. An ornate timber clock and bell tower with a weather vane adorns the structure. The two-storey bay on the left has a 6/6 sash window under a segmental arch on the ground floor. To the left, there is an entrance with a 6-panel door and overlight with glazing bars, set in a moulded case beneath a moulded flat hood supported by fluted pilasters. To the right, there are two mullion and transom lights with glazing bars under segmental arches.
The Grammar School section dates back to the early 15th century, with the roof raised around 1686. It is roughcast with a plain tile roof and is a single-storey and attic structure featuring a three-window range. The windows are two-light stone mullioned with trefoil heads, lattice-glazing, and casements, with the right window restored. There are five tile-hung gable dormers, each with two-light lattice glazed windows. The entrance consists of a two-leaf studded plank door with a moulded four-centred arch and jambs.
Inside, the hall from the 14th century retains its original roof with tie-beams, along with a second tier of tie-beams likely added around 1600. Barnaby House, dating from around 1400, maintains its original roof with cusped windbraces and features a first-floor room with 16th-century wall decoration. The range to the southeast includes a stone lateral stack and a brick end stack, with some original fenestration and some 19th-century insertions, as well as the jambs of a blocked doorway leading to Silkmill Lane.
