Description
23 and 23A Princess Street is a former shop that was originally a dwelling, built in the late 17th century. The building features painted brick with exposed timber-framing in the gable and has a plain tiled hipped gambrel roof. It stands three storeys tall with a four-window range facing Princess Street and a three-window range facing College Hill. The College Hill elevation has 12-pane flush-framed sash windows with flat-arched gauged brick heads, while the Princess Street elevation has casements with transoms. The ground floor has inserted shop fronts, with the fascia blocking the lower string course. There is a moulded timber overhanging eaves cornice and two hipped dormers in the roof, along with a rear wall stack. Inside, small scantling timber-framing is exposed in the partition wall, and there is an early staircase featuring twisted balusters, a heavy moulded rail, and newels.
