Description
The forecourt retaining wall, located approximately 70 metres to the south-west of Loton Park, dates from around 1840. It features a base made of roughly coursed red sandstone rubble, with a red sandstone ashlar parapet and piers. The wall is approximately 40 metres long, with each end angled back in a Tudor Gothic style. The parapets are present only on the angled sections at each end and include chamfered plinths and copings. The square inner end piers are topped with cinquefoil-panelled urn finials, and there are ramps leading up to square gate piers at the outer ends, which have trefoil-panelled sides and gabled tops. A ha-ha is located to the south-west. Thomas Jones of Chester, who worked at Loton Park around 1830 and 1838, may also be responsible for this retaining wall, which serves as the fourth side of the forecourt to the house. The wall is included for its group value.
