Description

Castle Cottage is a house that dates back to the 14th or 15th century and was largely remodeled in the mid-19th century. It features colour-washed pebbledash over rubble masonry and is partially timber framed, topped with slate roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape, consisting of a three-bay hall range with a projecting three-bay solar cross-wing to the west. The cross-wing has one storey and an attic, while the main range has two storeys, both adorned with scalloped barge boards. There are two brick stacks to the northeast of the main range and two stacks to the west of the cross-wing.

On the south front, there are one window to the left and three windows to the right, with lozenge-pattern glazing in the cross-wing. The main range features glazing bar sashes with moulded architraves, and a ground floor two-light casement window to the right. Wooden labels are present above the windows, and to the left in the main range, there are half-glazed flush double doors with a reeded surround and a canopied porch.

Inside, the main hall range has an inserted floor from around 1550 to 1600, with chamfered and stopped beams and joists. The roof timbers over the hall range are smoke-blackened, featuring V-struts above the collar and gouge-made carpenter's marks. The dining room includes panelled shutters and doors with Gothic details.
