Description
Reilth Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-18th century and early to mid-19th century. The building is timber framed and has been refaced and partly rebuilt using coursed limestone rubble, topped with slate roofs. It features a 'hall' and cross-wing plan with a baffle entry, oriented north-west to south-east. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, with a large rendered stone and brick ridge stack located centrally above the entrance on the right, and an integral stone end stack at the rear of the right-hand cross-wing.
The front of the building has four windows and large gables at each end, with mid-to-late 19th century and 20th century wooden two- and three-light cross casements. To the right of the centre, there is a two-storey gabled porch that has a pair of half-glazed doors, supported by attenuated unfluted Doric columns and a partial entablature. A datestone marked "TBS/1749" is found in the gable of the right-hand cross-wing. The cross-wing extends to the rear and shows evidence of a timber frame post in the north-west corner near the chimney stack. There is also a single-storey kitchen wing with a central ridge stack that forms a rear extension to the north-west.
Inside, the farmhouse features collar and tie-beam roof trusses with queen struts. The 'hall' area has high chamfered beams with stops, and an early 19th-century kitchen-range style fireplace with a segmental arch and a high shelf. Steps lead up to the cross-wing, which includes a ground floor north room that boasts a fine mid-18th century fireplace with a bolection moulded surround and pulvinated frieze, as well as a display cupboard with a shell niche and shaped shelves. An early 19th-century staircase features a columnular newel and stick balusters, and there are 18th-century panelled doors throughout.
