Description

A small barn dating from the mid- to late-17th century, situated approximately 10 metres south of Chapel Cottage. The building is timber framed with painted brick infill to the front and corrugated iron cladding to the rear, and has a corrugated iron roof. It is two-storied with doors on the left, right, and centre, and an infilled window in the centre of the ground floor. The timber framing features large square panels from cill to wall-plate, along with later horizontal members and long, straight tension braces. Features include reused jowled wall posts and other timbers. Inside, the barn has a staggered single-purlin roof in two wide bays, with a central queen-post truss and slightly curved windbraces. The joints are predominantly pegged and morticed throughout. Later 20th-century lofts have been inserted to the left and right. Farm buildings of this early date are rare, and this barn is a good example of a modest, 17th-century timber framed barn that retains a significant proportion of its original fabric and substantially intact frame. While it has undergone alterations—extensions and adaptations—these contribute to its special interest and historical value.
