Description
The disused windmill, located at National Grid Reference SJ 56652 29724, is a late 18th-century red brick tower mill that is currently not in use. It features a circular plan that tapers towards the top and has five levels, with two rectangular doorways and three square window openings arranged vertically. Although the cap is missing, the windmill retains the shaft for the sails and the gearing for the fantail located at the rear.
Inside, most of the floors have deteriorated, but it still holds heavy floor beams and joists, along with a massive main shaft, wallower, brake wheel, and other milling equipment. A millstone, which is not in its original position, can be found on the ground floor. Historically, this windmill was used to extract linseed oil for cattle feed and to crush bones for manure. It was once brightly painted and, along with the now-demolished Neptune's Whim, a Dutch-style cottage, contributed to a picturesque landscape near the south end of Hawk Lake.
