WESTON-UNDER- HAWKSTONE PARK SJ 5629-5729 REDCASTLE C.P. SJ 57213 29455 16/182 The Lion's Den - at N.G.R. SJ 57213 29455 GV II

Park feature, now disused. Probably late C18 for Sir Richard Hill, second baronet of Hawkstone. Round-headed recess cut into natural sandstone at east end of ditch, separating upper and lower wards of Red Castle (q.v.). Interior: retains the bottom ends of 2 bars of an iron grille and a recess in the stone floor, which formerly housed a painted stone statue of a lion. Small rock-cut 'window' to back wall. C.L.
