Description

Nos. 23 and 25, including the passage to Clifton Place, are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops. They were built in the early 19th century and have undergone later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of red brick with a slate roof that is partly hidden by an eaves parapet, and they feature red brick stacks located behind the ridge. The structures rise to three storeys and have a wooden moulded eaves cornice adorned with triglyphs. The front has two windows, with tripartite glazing bar sashes that include cornices and fluted detailing on the first floor, complemented by paterae and rosettes.

No. 23, on the left, features a 19th-century shop front with a moulded entablature supported by elaborate gilded console brackets, while No. 25 has a late 20th-century shop front. To the left, there is a round-arched passageway leading to Clifton Place, which retains two chamfered beams from a late medieval house, seemingly still in place. The front beam has mortices for closely set vertical posts, and the back beam, originally internal, showcases intertwining leaf decoration that emerges from a bird on the left and a beast, possibly a dragon, on the right. At the rear, there is a long 19th-century hip-roofed range made of red brick.
