Description
The Griffin Inn is a house that has been converted into an inn. It was originally built in the 17th century and underwent a re-fronting in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features roughcast brick and painted ashlar facing on the ground floor, with chamfered angle quoins that conceal a timber frame. It has a slate roof topped with a prominent reddish-brown brick ridge stack located slightly to the right of the center.
The inn is two stories high, with a moulded wooden eaves cornice and a moulded stone cill band. The front has three windows, which are mid-19th century four-paned sashes set in flush-framed moulded surrounds, complete with projecting moulded keystones. There are similar lintels above blocked openings on the ground floor to the left and right of the central entrance, which features a 20th-century panelled door.
At the rear, there is a two-storey red brick range that extends at right angles. This section has two 16-paned glazing bar sashes with segmental heads and one three-light leaded casement, along with a tall brick ridge stack. Inside, the ground-floor front rooms reveal exposed timber framing with square panels and chamfered ceiling beams. The rear range also has square panels on the outer walls but was entirely rebuilt after a fire around 1980, including a rebuilt inglenook fireplace located at the junction between the two ranges.
