Description

The Barrow and Willey War Memorial is a sandstone structure located in the parkland of Willey Hall, commemorating the fallen from the villages of Barrow and Willey in Shropshire.

The memorial features a Celtic cross with a wheelhead and a panelled base, which is placed on a tomb chest with indented corners above a stepped plinth. The cross head has a central boss from which four stylised flower shapes extend. Behind the tapered arms of the cross is a plain circlet, and each arm has a hollowed panel at its centre. The stepped base is inscribed with the words ‘TO THE / GLORY OF GOD’. The lid of the tomb chest has a hipped profile, and each side features a shouldered, rectangular panel in relief.

On the south side, the panel is inscribed with a dedication from George 6th Baron Forester, stating that the monument is erected in memory of those from the parishes of Willey and Barrow who died for their king and country in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. Below this inscription, on the moulded base of the tomb chest, are a crossed rifle and sword with a laurel wreath at the centre. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the sides of the memorial. The north side serves as a memorial for the Second World War, inscribed with the names of the fallen and the phrase ‘WHEN SHALL THEIR GLORY FADE’ along with the years 1939 to 1945.
