Description

The Cotton College War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1920 and subsequently altered after the Second World War. It is situated in the village of Cotton, near St Wilfrid’s Church cemetery and the Faber Catholic Primary School.

The memorial consists of an oak Calvary beneath a pitched roof, set upon an octagonal shaft decorated with carved roses. The base of this shaft has four projecting elements, each also carved with roses. The shaft rises from a two-stepped, octagonal Portland stone plinth featuring blind niches on alternating faces, with the names of the fallen inscribed within sunken panels on the others. Raised Gothic script appears around the top of the lower tier of the plinth.

The plinth stands on two octagonal York stone steps, which in turn are set on a cross-shaped slab base. A stone plaque, inset with lead lettering, is positioned on the upper step. The plaque's inscription reads: "SODALIBUS QUI CONTRA INFESTISSIMUS HOSTES FORTITER / DIMIRANTES PRO PATRIA / FRATRIBUSQUE ANINIAE NON / PEPERRERE FILN S. WILFRIDI AD PERPETUAM / BENEFICCI MEMORIAM GRATISSIMI DEDIRARUNT."
