Description
This barn, located approximately 20 meters south-east of Lower Aldress Farmhouse, dates from the mid- to late 17th century and has undergone some later alterations. It features a weatherboarded timber frame with corrugated iron cladding on the south side and uncoursed limestone rubble on the left gable end, topped with a slate roof. The barn has two levels and includes four eaves hatches on the south side, along with doors on the left, right, and center.
Inside, the framing is visible, showcasing square panels with three sections from the cill to the wall-plate. The partitions are weatherboarded and timber framed, supported by long straight tension braces. The double-purlin roof spans four bays and is supported by Queen-strut trusses, which have V-struts extending from the collar to the left gable end and the first bay from the right. Additionally, two trusses feature raking struts from the tie beams that support the principal rafters. Lower Aldress Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
