Description

The remains of the Church of St Mary are located approximately 215 metres to the northwest of The Flags in Broughton. This parish church dates from the late 12th century and was partly demolished and ruined after 1858. The structure is made of roughly dressed yellow/grey and red sandstone. The remains include a chancel that measures about 10 by 7 metres and stands up to approximately one metre high.

While architectural features such as windows and doors were noted by Cranage and Pevsner, none were visible in the ivy-covered ruins during the survey in December 1985. The old church was replaced by a new building on Church Road to the south in 1858. Originally, it consisted of a nave, chancel, porch, and bellcote, and it is said to have had a 12th-century chancel arch. The church was previously a chapelry of St. Chad's Church in Shrewsbury.

In the new Church of St Mary, there is a watercolour depicting the old church and churchyard before 1858, as well as an oil painting of the ruins. To the south of the ruins, there are remains of a churchyard cross and several chest tombs. Photographs from the Shropshire Libraries Collection show the north and east chancel walls still standing, featuring two small east windows, a chamfered north doorway, a chamfered trefoiled piscina, and a southeast buttress.
